"A Dragon lives among the flowers"
My work is about the fusion of Eastern and Western cultures, specifically focusing on my Chinese heritage and upbringing in the Midwest. My identity plays a large role in my work as I find my place between these two cultures. Growing up as an Asian American in the Midwest, I’ve developed conflicting views from the clash of Chinese and American cultures. With my art, I attempt to ‘fix’ this clash as I try to turn this confusion and juxtaposition into some kind of union or harmony. This mindset helps me through my process in my work. I take inspiration from plants and animals around me in the Midwest but also from symbols and motifs that are typically seen in traditional Chinese art. I start with sketching, painting, and then mounting and collaging. In this show, I explore a mix of 2D and 3D as well as a mixture of traditional Western and Eastern materials. I use traditional Chinese watercolor materials including Chinese pigments, calligraphy ink, bamboo brushes, and rice paper. I explore new ways to use and combine this traditional practice with Western and modern techniques. In the end, the results show a new style from the fusion of both these cultures.
